Associate of Science Degree
Our Elementary Education program prepares all students within a teacher-preparation pathway emphasizing cultural approaches to educating future teachers. Faculty and staff teach students through a cultural responsive education approach with an emphasis in Anishinaabe ways of knowing intertwined throughout all courses.
Founded in 1987, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College was built on years of collaborative partnerships and continues to function successfully using a collaborative model. Through a unique 2+2 articulation agreement with Winona State University, students will complete the upper division course requirements and practical teaching portions of the bachelor’s degree program through Winona State University. This collaborative model is planned to ultimately transition the entire four-year program to reside at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Coursework within the Elementary Education program offers opportunities in leadership, community innovation, and building connections. A key component of the program includes preparing students for the Minnesota Board of Teaching exams and license, but also promoting an understanding of each student’s individual cultural values and the cultural values of others.
Students will complete a sequence of courses and practical experiences in preparation for a teaching career. Program requirements include general education courses, teacher-education courses, and classroom experience, including a long-term student teaching assignment in a local school. Establishing connections with other students in the program to share insights and experiences from the hands-on training is a key component of our program, and to becoming a successful teacher after graduation.
The program will deliver culturally relevant pedagogy to aspiring teachers to enhance their employment options. The program aims to use the transformative collection approach that draws from a range of knowledge systems and worldviews, using techniques such as storytelling, talking circles, theatre arts, music and dance, hands-on activities, Ojibwe language and sustainable environments.
