DESCRIPTION:Join us for hand games at FDLTCC! \nDate: Tuesday Nov 7 & 21\nLocation: FDLTCC Commons\nTime: 3-4pm \nFree and open to the public. \nHand games\, sometimes called stick game\, bones game\, is an ancient team game utilized by the Plains and Southwest Indigenous Peoples of the North American continent. \nTwo teams play against each other. Each team has a captain and must have at least 3 players to fulfill the team requirements. \nTeams compete in a guessing style game to find which hands the other team is hiding the bones (wooden usually) and guessing by using certain hand signals. The specific hand signals will be instructed each day we play hand games. \nThe game is very inclusive\, fun to play\, and has a lot of history and tradition associated to it. \nEnjoying hand games? Refreshments will be served. \n\nDiscover the significance of the birch bark canoe in Anishinaabe culture and language.\nLearn about the birch bark canoe’s history\, design\, materials\, construction\, and use in wild rice harvesting.\nA highlight will be an examination of the traditional birch bark canoe on display at FDLTCC.\n\nErik Simula is a Finnish-American cultural educator and birch bark canoe builder from Duluth\, Minnesota. He is a graduate student in the Master of Tribal Resource and Environmental Stewardship (MTRES) Program at the University of Minnesota Duluth and a research assistant with the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership to support the 2024 revision of the 1854 Ceded Territory Climate Change Adaptation Plan.
