CLOQUET, Minn. — Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC) has been awarded more than $900,000 through two competitive grants to strengthen STEM education and expand student-led water quality monitoring across northeastern Minnesota. The funding will support hands-on research opportunities, environmental stewardship, and partnerships with regional schools and community organizations.
The awards include a $500,000 National Science Foundation Targeted STEM Infusion Project (TSIP) grant for Building a Student Research and STEM Pathway at FDLTCC and a $404,000 Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund grant to expand the Lake Superior River Watch program.
Together, these initiatives will provide students with meaningful research experiences while addressing critical environmental issues affecting the Lake Superior watershed.

The National Science Foundation project will enhance STEM education by integrating undergraduate research into classroom instruction and creating clear pathways for students to pursue advanced degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students will gain practical experience through faculty-mentored research on issues including forestry, wildlife biology, aquatic invasive species, mercury monitoring, and climate change ecology.
The project builds on FDLTCC’s mission of promoting academic excellence through the preservation of Anishinaabe language, culture, and history. By combining Indigenous knowledge with modern scientific practices, the initiative offers students a distinctive educational experience rooted in stewardship of Tribal lands and natural resources.
The LCCMR-funded Lake Superior River Watch program expands a successful environmental monitoring effort that has engaged hundreds of high school students over the past decade. Working alongside teachers and FDLTCC faculty, students will collect biological, chemical, and physical water quality data from streams throughout the western Lake Superior Basin.
Participating schools will receive training, equipment, and classroom support to conduct seasonal stream monitoring using standardized scientific protocols. Student-collected data will contribute to statewide monitoring efforts while helping participants develop skills in scientific investigation, teamwork, data analysis, and environmental stewardship.
The expanded program will include monitoring sites within the St. Louis, Cloquet, Nemadji, and Southern Superior watersheds and incorporate laboratory water quality analysis to strengthen the accuracy and value of the collected data.
Students will also have opportunities to present their findings through posters, presentations, annual newsletters, and the FDLTCC Research Symposium. These public-facing experiences are designed to strengthen communication skills while fostering greater community awareness of regional water quality issues.
By connecting secondary students, undergraduate researchers, faculty, Tribal partners, and regional environmental professionals, the projects create a collaborative network dedicated to protecting Minnesota’s water resources and inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.
The combined funding represents a significant investment in experiential education, scientific research, and community partnerships that will benefit students and the broader Lake Superior region for years to come.
