FootballThunder Close 2016 Season with a Win

The 2016 Thunder Football team opened the season with a solid 40-19 victory on the road on August 27 in Fergus Falls against MCAC Western Division opponent Minnesota State-Fergus Falls. The Thunder offense produced 491 total yards, balanced well with 221 rushing yards and 270 passing yards. The Thunder defense allowed 360 total yards but was able to keep Minnesota State-Fergus Falls out of the end zone when they were in the red zone.

Thunder punter Dalton Bryant was named Special Teams Player of the Week in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Eastern Division for his outstanding performance in the game. Dalton used a strong, accurate leg in his punting debut for the Thunder by averaging 38.5 yards for six punts. Bryant had a long kick of 51 yards while also pinning the Minnesota State-Fergus Falls offense inside their own 20-yard line five times during the Thunder’s victory. Dalton is a freshman from Hinesville, Georgia.

The Thunder lost their home opener 22-4 on Saturday, September 3, against top-rated North Dakota State College of Science at Spartan Field in Superior. The Thunder defense held the explosive Wildcat offense to just 217 total yards and posted two safeties in an outstanding effort, but the Thunder offense never got on track in the game. Tight end Brandon Pylar had five receptions for 50 yards to lead the Thunder offense. Ja’Paul Sinkfield and Juwan Johnson had eight total tackles, and Jeff Andrew had seven total tackles in the game on the defensive side. Punter Dalton Bryant had another outstanding day in windy conditions.

On Saturday, September 10, the Thunder played host to the Vermilion Community College Ironmen at NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior, WI. The Ironmen pulled away with 27 points in the third quarter to cruise to a 40-22 victory over the Thunder. Both teams struggled to find any type of offensive flow during the first half that was plagued with penalties and miscues. The Thunder led 6-0 at the halftime break after running back Darion Griner put the home team on the board in the second quarter from two yards out, followed by a missed 2-point conversion attempt.

Thunder defensive end Damon Garner led the Thunder defense with eight tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. Garner is a rarity in college football in that he plays full-time, doubling as an offensive lineman. Thunder punter Dalton Bryant also had a busy day, punting nine times with a 36.3 average on a windy day and several times from in the Thunder end zone.

Week 4 featured another home game for the Thunder, but visiting Mesabi Range Technical & Community College upstaged the Thunder with a 22-10 victory built on two kick returns for touchdowns. The Thunder defense played well again, led by Ja’Paul Sinkfield’s 12.5 total tackles, including 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one safety. Punter Dalton Bryant continued his strong season with five punts for a 42.8 yards per punt average, with a long punt of 50 yards and one placed inside the 20 yard line.

Week 5 was a tough one for the Thunder as the team traveled to Brainerd to take on undefeated and highly ranked Central Lakes College. The final score was Central Lakes College 51, Thunder 0. The Thunder defense played well in the first half until fatigue set in during the second half. Thunder team captain and defensive tackle Damon Garner played an outstanding game, with three sacks and eight tackles total.

Week 6 featured the final home game of the season for the Thunder, hosting Rochester Technical & Community College at Bromberg Field. The Thunder defense slowed Rochester’s offense throughout the game, with Rochester clinging to a 15-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. A late touchdown in the fourth quarter by Rochester produced the final score of Rochester 22, Thunder 14.

The Thunder traveled to Grand Rapids on October 8 to play Itasca Community College in Week 7, losing 31-8. The MCAC Eastern Division loss officially knocked the Thunder out of the postseason playoffs, ending a streak of four consecutive playoff appearances.

The Thunder ended the 2016 season with a win on October 15 during Week 8, defeating the Minnesota West Bluejays 6-3 in Worthington. The Thunder defense recorded four takeaways and were led by Ja’Paul Sinkfield’s 12 tackles, plus Damon Garner added 6 tackles and a sack. Thunder punter Dalton Bryant averaged nearly 40 yards per punt and dropped three inside the 20 yard line. Tristan Snow caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joseph Jordan.

The Thunder finish 2-6 on the season.

THUNDER Finish 2015 SEASON in playoffs

Following three consecutive appearances in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Championship Playoffs, the Thunder Football team earned a fourth straight playoff trip in 2015. In the opening round of the playoffs, the Thunder led 6-3 at halftime over defending and eventual champion Rochester Technical College before running out of steam in the 30-12 loss.

A total of 14 Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Thunder football players earned Minnesota College Athletic Conference All-Division honors for the 2015 season. The Thunder placed four players onto the MCAC First Team, five onto the Second Team, and five more earned Honorable Mention honors. Seven players achieved MCAC All-Academic Team honors.
