“We are honored to welcome Minnesota Poet Laureate, Gwen Westerman, shared FDLTCC English Faculty Member, Maglina Lubovich, PhD, “Westerman is ideal for this series, as her poetry functions as an act of storytelling, one that uses language—both English and Dakota—to explore our place in the natural world.”

The Ruth A. Myers Lecture Series in the Sciences and Humanities commemorates the fundamental importance of the liberal arts tradition to higher education and to understanding who we are as human beings in this complex world. Ruth A. Myers was a champion of Indigenous education and among the founders of FDLTCC.

“The Ruth A. Myers Lecture Series in the Sciences & Humanities began two years ago in the hope of showing the importance and value of the liberal arts, both for our students and for our communities,” explained Lubovich, “Our inaugural lecture featured Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass.”

Gwen Nell Westerman is a poet, a teacher, and a fiber artist, which are all aspects of storytelling. And on occasion, she sings, too. A member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, she is a Professor in English at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and teaches Technical Communication, Literature, Creative Writing, and Humanities. She serves as the current Minnesota Poet Laureate.

Testimonials

It is awesome here at the FDLTCC Education Program because it is like a family here, if you need help or are struggling with anything, you have quite a few people who will help you out.

My favorite thing about FDLTCC is the people. I’ve met fantastic students, faculty and staff who go above and beyond what I expected.

I chose FDLTCC because of its size and the curriculum. When I first came here in 2019, I was just looking for what I needed to volunteer, perhaps in a crisis shelter. I met with Don Jarvinen, and the rest is history.
