Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is excited to announce the graduation of 22 students who successfully completed program requirements in the Law Enforcement Skills Training Program in 2024. This is the 24th group of students to participate in the Law Enforcement Skills Training Program at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and the majority of this year’s graduates are completing the program with conditional offers at agencies across the region.

During the ceremony, class speaker Dylan Clark of Cloquet provided commentary on his experience in the program.

“All of us have sacrificed a lot to get to this point,” shared Clark, “…and I couldn’t be more proud of any of you.”

2015 graduate, Nate Smith of the Duluth Police Department, shared reflections as a FDLTCC graduate and commented on the rigor of the program at FDLTCC compared to similar programs.

“The standards for education objectives and firearm qualifications here… are far superior,” shared Smith, “…which means you as students here have had an even harder time in school than your law enforcement peers… and you should be very impressed with that.”

The Les Northrup Leadership Award, voted on by fellow students, recognizing a classmate who epitomizes leadership, wisdom, mentoring and being a role model to their peers was awarded to Andrew Schamberger of Bloomington. Instructor of the Year Award, voted on by the class, went to Steven Pruse of the Duluth Police Department. Pruse teaches below 100, SFST, Traffic Stops, Firearms, and EVOC. The Katie Poirier Scholarship was awarded to Hope Anderson and Shelby Reynolds.

Students completed the intensive hands-on training in the morning of June 28, before the graduation ceremony that afternoon. Classroom training and over 600 hours of skill training are required of all individuals seeking careers as peace officers in Minnesota. After classroom and skills training, students are required to pass the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board exam to become eligible for employment as a peace officer in Minnesota.

Skills training topics include: accident investigation, auto theft, radio communications, mobile field force, crimes in progress response, domestic violence investigation and intervention, drug interdiction, DUI detection and standardized field sobriety testing, emergency vehicle operations, radar enforcement, traffic stops, crime scene investigation, gang education, drug and controlled substance investigations, report writing, aerosol chemical weapons and chemical agents, diversity, community policing, professional ethics, and firearms training.

Testimonials

I chose FDLTCC because of its size and the curriculum. When I first came here in 2019, I was just looking for what I needed to volunteer, perhaps in a crisis shelter. I met with Don Jarvinen, and the rest is history.

It is awesome here at the FDLTCC Education Program because it is like a family here, if you need help or are struggling with anything, you have quite a few people who will help you out.

My favorite thing about FDLTCC is the people. I’ve met fantastic students, faculty and staff who go above and beyond what I expected.
