The Fine Arts departments at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College are presenting a schedule of activities on campus to celebrate Fine Arts Week during April 25 through April 30, 2015. The events include a range of music and theater performances, plus film, literary and visual arts events. All activities are free and open to the public.
Fine Arts Week 2015 activities on campus begin on Saturday, April 25, with a local premiere screening of the feature film “The Jingle Dress” at 3:00 p.m. in Room 195. The film event is part of the “One Book, One Community” area reading project sponsored by the Cloquet Public Library. “The Jingle Dress” is a contemporary story of a Native American family who moves from their northern Minnesota reservation home to the faster-paced urban environment of Minneapolis. The film’s director and writer, William Eigen, will be on hand for a question and answer session following the film. (The film is not rated and lasts 98 minutes.)
On Monday, April 27, “The Monuments Men” movie will be shown at 2:00 p.m. in Room 195. Based on a true story, “The Monuments Men” centers around an unlikely World War II platoon tasked with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. The film features an all-star cast including George Clooney, Jean Dujardin, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Matt Damon, and others.
Tuesday, April 28, is the Book Release Party to celebrate the publication of the third edition of “The Thunderbird Review,” the annual literary anthology of selected writing by local authors and students that is published by Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. Meet the writers during the book release event starting at 4:00 p.m. in the commons, plus hear a poetry reading by Rocky Makes Room For Them.
A performance of the play “forget me not when far away” takes place in the amphitheater on Wednesday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. The award-winning Minneapolis theater company Ten Thousand Things returns to campus to bring to life a new comedy about a soldier who returns from a long war and must navigate a new, changed world.
A free concert by Claudia Schmidt is set for Wednesday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the amphitheater. Claudia has spent more than four decades touring North America and Europe, performing in venues ranging from small clubs to 4,000-seat theaters to festival stages in front of 25,000 rapt listeners. She has recorded nineteen albums of mostly original songs, exploring folk, blues, and jazz idioms, featuring her acclaimed 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. Free admission and open to everyone. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Wednesday is also Poem In Your Pocket Day when anyone who has a poem in their pocket can earn treats and prizes if randomly selected by members of the secret poetry society on campus.
Thursday, April 30, features more music on campus. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the amphitheater, the Li’l Thunder Learning Center will showcase their talented young students with a choir concert. At 1:30 p.m., the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Choral Ensemble and applied music students with present their Spring Semester concert in the amphitheater.
The Art Club will host a baked goods and craft sale each day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the student commons, and displays of student art will be around campus all week.
