Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has published the fourth edition of its literary anthology, The Thunderbird Review. The 97-page book features writing and art submitted by students from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and residents of northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin communities.
The journal received over 100 submissions this year to consider for inclusion, and the editorial staff spent a significant amount of time reading and discussing the submissions to decide which pieces to include. This year, student editors Matthew Thiry and Taylor Leuzzo worked with recently retired Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College English instructor Jan Chronister and newly hired English instructor Darci Schummer to produce the publication.
The Thunderbird Review anthology is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in writing, editing, and publishing at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
“Working on the journal is a great experience for students,” said Schummer. “It is also so important for students to have a place to submit their work. The feeling of seeing your work in print for the first time, which it is for many of these students, is indescribable.”
On Tuesday, April 19, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College hosted a book release party that brought together the anthology’s featured artists and writers for an event in the campus commons. The event was part of the college’s annual Fine Arts Week, which celebrates local creativity and talent found on campus and throughout the region.
The book release event featured many of the newly published authors plus established writers from the region in an open mic setting of readings from the anthology. FDLTCC students Matt Thiry, Angie Skutevik, and Danielle Laveau were among the readers as well as local writers Viola LaBounty and Deborah Rasmussen.

Funds from book sales go toward producing the current publication as well as the next edition.

Testimonials

It is awesome here at the FDLTCC Education Program because it is like a family here, if you need help or are struggling with anything, you have quite a few people who will help you out.

My favorite thing about FDLTCC is the people. I’ve met fantastic students, faculty and staff who go above and beyond what I expected.

I chose FDLTCC because of its size and the curriculum. When I first came here in 2019, I was just looking for what I needed to volunteer, perhaps in a crisis shelter. I met with Don Jarvinen, and the rest is history.
