Omashkooz: Returning a Native
November 12 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Omashkooz is the Ojibwe word for elk. Mike Schrage, Wildlife Program Manager, and Makenzie Henk, Elk Biologist, for the Fond du Lac Resource Management Division will share plans by the Fond du Lac Band to restore elk to their Reservation and surrounding forests. Once numbering in the thousands and found across most of Minnesota, today just a few score elk are confined to two small areas in far northwest Minnesota. By restoring elk to our region, the Band hopes to return a native species to more of its historical range in Minnesota and provide for future elk hunting and viewing opportunities. In addition, elk are an adaptable species historically and currently found across most of the continent. A successful elk restoration will establish a climate hardy species able to cope with a range of future climate scenarios for our region. Mike and Makenzie will talk about the history and ecology of elk in the eastern United States and give an update on the process of the Band’s elk restoration effort.
